Introduction to Shamanic Journeying

A Beginning

Shamanic Journeying is an ancient technique used to deepen ones spiritual connections.  In this class  we will compare traditional shamanism to modern core shamanism.  Through rhythmic drumming, we will transcend our normal conscious state and journey to meet the many helping spirits that are always surrounding us.  We will discuss how shamanic practice can benefit modern people by enriching our existing spiritual beliefs and reconnecting us with the natural world.  We will explore shamanic beliefs regarding sickness. Finally, we will look at how journeying can play a part in our everyday lives.

Participants should bring a blanket or mat to lay on, a bandana or blindfold, and a notebook to record their journeys

Journeying as a Family

Strengthening Connections

Traditional knowledge was once passed down from elder to child in the form of stories.  They would share in experiences together as they grew and these experiences would become the teaching stories of the next generation.  This program is designed for parents and children that have some journeying experience.  We will work with our children to create a story.  The purpose of the story may vary from class to class, but each parent and child will journey and then combine their experiences.  They will then write and illustrate the story so it can be shared with others.

Finding the Way

Awakening Intuition

In our fast paced world we become deaf to our intuition.  We do not listen to our inner voice and blunder along, unable to figure out why things seem to be “off”.  The shamanic journey is an excellent tool  for looking into our lives, but there are times when we can’t pull out our drums  and journey.  This class will focus on how to journey in the moment and tools that can help accomplish this.  We will meet a spirit that will work with us to enhance our ability to listen to our inner voice.  We will look at using objects to assist us for “quick” divination and how these can be formed into a useful tool.  We will journey while relating events as they happen so our partners can ask questions during the journey.  Finally, we will discuss transcending the use of tools all together.

Participants should bring a blanket or mat to lay on, a bandana or blindfold, and a notebook to record their journeys

*Must have a basic understanding of shamanic journeying.

Warrior Face

Understanding Fear

In many cultures, warriors would don masks before entering battle.  This could take the form of simply painting the face or creating ornate ritual garb.  This allowed the person to alter their consciousness and transcend their normal limitations.  We will explore what it is to be a “warrior” in our modern world.  We will journey to our ancestors to find our warrior face and learn how to use it to strengthen us in times of need.  Fear is the one emotion that limits us the most in our lives.  We will journey into our fears to understand them and then overcome what they represent.

Participants should bring a blanket or mat to lay on, a bandana or blindfold, and a notebook to record their journeys.

*Must have a basic understanding of shamanic journeying.

Into Our Dreams

Explore What is Hidden

Dreams have always been a source of insight and power for many cultures.  It was traditional to take a dream to an elder for interpretation so that it’s full meaning could be understood.  Unfortunately, many of us don’t have access to such a person in our lives.  We carry our dreams with us, never comprehending their true worth.  In this class, we will journey into our dreams to understand what they have to teach.  We will search for important dreams we have lost and work to recover them.  This will strengthen our connection to the world of dreams and increase our ability to not only look deeper into our dreams, but to help others do the same.

Participants should bring a blanket or mat to lay on, a bandana or blindfold, and a notebook to record their journeys

Gaurdians of the Four Directions

Building Connections

Most cultures have specific beliefs about what spirits or energies reside in the four directions.  Today, we often have to discover this for ourselves.  Even those of us who have met our guardians sometimes neglect to visit them often enough.  We will journey to discover what guardians sit in each of the directions or renew our contact with them.  We will find out what information they may have for us  and what we can do to honor them.  The journey will take the form of a quest.  We will spend 4 “days” in the other world exploring what the directions have to teach us.  This involves an extended journey lasting approximately 45 minutes.

Participants should bring a blanket or mat to lay on, a bandana or blindfold, and a notebook to record their journeys

The Black City

Deeper Understanding

There is a belief that often our greatest adversaries, the things we fear most, can become our strongest allies and teachers if we have the will to face them.  There is a black city that houses the spirits of disease and illness.  In this class ,we will journey there to meet these spirits and see what we can learn from them.  We will gather protective spirits that will advise us and travel with us to this dark place.  We will explore the city and learn how the spirits there can help us heal the physical illnesses they cause.  Returning, we will share our insights and compare our experiences.
